Bug Count!
Join us for some citizen science for Earth Day! Walk the creek and search under rocks to find and identify macroinvertebrates - the critters that make up the base of our food chain! Examples include crayfish, mayfly, caddisfly, and other larvae, snails, etc. This will help us understand the health of our waterways and provide a baseline for future reference!

All participants should dress well for outdoor weather and prepare to get wet. Waders or muck boots recommend.
No open-toed shoes.
All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Anyone under 18 must have a life jacket. If you do not have a life jacket you cannot enter the creek.
Only 20 spots available. You will receive an email with the meeting location if you make it in.
Baden Earth Day

Keep Leet Neat Litter Cleanup
Join Leet Township for their annual Keep Leet Neat litter cleanup!! 🤩
When: Saturday April 20th 10-12
Where: Leet Township Municipal Building - 194 Ambridge Ave, Fair Oaks, 15003
Meet up at the municipal building and enjoy coffee and donuts before heading out to keep Leet neat! Gloves, bags and vests will be provided, all that is needed is YOU! Bring a friend and come join in on the fun while making a huge impact on our beautiful watershed!

Join us for Opening Day of Trout at Big Sewickley Creek Brewery! Come visit our table from 10:00-2:00 and see what we are doing in the watershed while enjoying local beer and food truck treats! Litter Cleanup!
Cleanup Location: Cooney Hollow Road
Come join us for our first official litter cleanup of 2024!
We will be cleaning up one of our favorite watershed green spaces, Cooney Hollow! We will be splitting into groups to pick up both lower and upper Cooney Hollow road so that it is ready to show off how beautiful it is just in time for opening day of trout fishing!
We will be meeting at 180 Cooney Hollow road. Please bring a water bottle, long pants, closed toe shoes, and bug spray if you wish. We will supply all the litter supplies, vests, gloves, etc, and special thanks to Economy Borough for providing litter pickup!

Winter Sowing Workshop
Come learn how to winter sow with Fern Hollow Nature Center and Big Sewickley Creek Watersed Association! This fun activity will teach you how you can easily start native seeds over the winter for sprouts to plant in the spring! Milkweed and other native plants will be the focus. More details coming soon!
Hellbent - A Nature Festival
Come join the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association, Bell Acres Firehall and local environmental organizations for a FREE festival focused on the rights of nature! Join us for 3 movie screenings of Hellbent, the story of local Pennsylvanians fighting a fracking injection well to save a creek with a rare salamander inhabitat.
Between screenings, visit with folks from Allegheny Land Trust, Fern Hollow Nature Center, Beaver County Conservation District, and more to see all the awesome things they are doing in the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed! Purchase hot dogs and popcorn from the Bell Acres Ladies Auxiliary, paint rocks to deploy in the watershed, and more!
The film is 20 minutes long and will be shown at 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, and 2:00 pm
Film recommended for high school ages and up for some language, though all ages are welcome.

Firefly Hike at Linbrook Park
Join BSCWA President and Allegheny County Naturalist Katie Stanley for a Firefly Hike at Linbrook Park! Explore Linbrook as the sun goes down while learning about our state insect, the Firefly! Search for lightening bugs and learn how you can help protect these magical creatures. Meet at the parking lots at the park entrance along Big Sewickley Creek Road, no registration necessary. Open to all ages!
In an effort to limit light, we will be hiking in the dark. If you do bring a flashlight please only use a red light setting to protect the fireflies and our night vision. Hike will be about 0.5 miles along paved road and is rated as easy. Linbrook Park address: 2631 Big Sewickley Creek Road, Sewickley PA 15143

Photography Contest
Our popular photography contest is BACK! 📸 From June 1-30, take a photo within the boundaries of the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed to possibly win a prize! Here's how it works:
1. Take a photo within the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed (yes, you can submit multiple photos!)
2. Submit your photo by posting it on Facebook and tagging our page OR by emailing it to us at bscwatershed@gmail.com
3. Attach the photo's GPS coordinations to the post/email so we can verify it was taken in the watershed
4. Wait for our Facebook Friends to vote! Each photo like=1 vote. Winners will be announced on July 7th!
5. If you win, you will be contacted to choose from one of our 3 awesome prizes

We will provide trash bags, gloves, and vests- all we need is you! By cleaning litter in and around our waterways, we keep it safe for the people who use it to recreate and for the animals who use it to live. If you want to attend, simply show up. Litter cleanups are a fun, fulfilling and easy way to keep our watershed beautiful. All ages welcome.

Tree planting not your style? Pick up litter instead! Join Leet Twp Public Works for their annual Keep Leet Neat litter cleanup! Leet will be providing gloves, vests and bags, all they need is YOU! Please dress appropriately for any weather and wear close toed shoes. Meet at the Leet Twp municipal building for supplies and instructions. If you know of any areas within Leet Twp that could use some litter attention, please let us or Andy Wanto with the Public Works department know!
Earth Day Tree Planting
Join Penn State Extension’s StreamSmarts program participants to install a riparian buffer in Linbrook Park. A riparian buffer is a planted zone along a waterway that helps stablize the streambank, reduce erosion and flooding, and provide wildlife habitat. What better way to celebrate Earth Day then planting trees in your local community? Participants should bring gloves and a shovel.

Guided Winter Hike!
Join Allegheny County Naturalist Katie Stanley for a guided nature hike at Linbrook Park! Learn all about how local wildlife survives the winter, what lives in the Big Sewickley Creek, identification of trees without leaves, and whatever else we come across! Also learn about the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and what they are doing to help keep Big Sewickley Creek beautiful and healthy.
Meet at the soccer field parking lots at the park entrance. Hike will be approximately 2 miles and is rated as moderate with some steep hill climbs. Best for ages 10 and up. Dress well for muddy conditions.
No registration necessary, just show up!
